Guesstimation

Guesstimation is the art of approximate estimates made using available information, e.g.

• Is there more teachers in Boston than garbage trucks?

•  Who pollutes the environment more: a car or a horse?

•  What's safer: to fly to Washington, or to drive a car?

At first sight it looks difficult, but the point is that there is really a lot more information available to you than you might think!

Such questions are frequently asked at job interviews in places like Google. Guesstimation skills are also useful is science and in life (e.g. to impress your friends!) While simple math (multiplication and division) is sufficient to solve such problems, very few people know how to make quick guesstimates.

Такие задачки задают на интервью в местах, где вы мечтаете (или даже не мечтаете) работать, например, в Google. Умение прикидывать полезно в науке и просто в жизни (скажем, для правильной интерпретации новостей).
